6th Grade Studies
This spring, our 6th graders will be exploring Earth Science by studying the Grand Canyon.  This month we studied different kinds of Sedimentary Rocks.  We even made our own rock layer basins.  The students  made layers of sandstone, shale and limestone.

As part of our Earth History Unit, students explored the effects of erosion by studying a stream table we set up in class.  Students were able to identify sediments, deltas, flood plains etc.  Then they made hypothesis on how they thought the Grand Canyon was formed.

Student created rock layer basins.  The bottom layer is sandstone, middle layer shale and the top layer is limestone.

Student created Colorado Plateau projects.  Students were given the choice of how they wanted to present their National Park.  Paintings, sculptures, posters and powerpoints were some of the methods used.

Powell expedition to the Grand Canyon journals.  Students created "authentic" journals pretending they were a crew member on the original expedition.
